Life Coaching Services for
APPIC applicants
Welcome to Embracing Alchemy’s Life Coaching services for APPIC applicants participating in the 2024 Match (Phases I and II*).
Congrats on making it to the internship application process! All of your hard work and sacrifice…is not quite over AND you’ve made a lot of progress toward your goal of earning your doctoral degree. Last year 3,319 applicants were successfully matched in Phase I of the 2023 APPIC Match.
“A total of 49% of all applicants who obtained a position matched to their first choice internship program, 72% received one of their top two choices, and 85% received one of their top three choices.”

This data is very encouraging! More sites have been added over the years and many applicants are matching with their top preferences. The rest of the data…
“A total of 3906 students submitted applications in Phase I and 483 did not match in Phase I.”

A lot of programs are intentional about the structure and support they offer to students during this process. Efforts to prepare “standout” applications and meetings to sharpen interview skills allow many students to improve their chances of being matched in Phase I. And still, many stories exist of disrupted and downright challenging journeys to internship. Having a life coach focused on supporting your best mental and emotional wellness during this time is valuable.
Dr. Parlor has experience in this process as both an applicant and application reviewer/faculty in her most recent employment. She is prepared to support APPIC applicants, specifically those who may be returning to school and changing careers or later in life students as you wait for February 16, 2024 and prepare to adjust to all outcomes.
“My life coaching sessions for APPIC applicants offers personalized guidance and support to help you overcome challenges, sustain your mental well-being, build on your strengths and potentially experience the APPIC match process as a positive and meaningful event in your life.”

Life Coaching is not Therapy: Understanding the Difference
Life coaching and therapy may share similarities, however they are distinct approaches to personal growth and well-being. It’s essential to understand the differences between the two, how they may complement each other and when to access each as a resource.
Therapy: Healing the Past
Therapy, also known as counseling or psychotherapy, primarily focuses on helping you cope with emotional difficulties, mental health issues, and past traumas. A psychotherapist is a licensed mental health professional trained to diagnose and treat psychological disorders, using evidence-based techniques to help patients process their emotions, improve their mental health, and develop coping strategies for challenging situations.
Therapy often involves exploring and addressing unresolved issues from the past, such as traumatic experiences, family dynamics, or negative thought patterns, which may be affecting the patient’s present-day functioning and well-being.
Life Coaching: Shaping the Future
Life coaching, on the other hand, is a forward-facing approach to betterment that focuses on setting and achieving personal or professional goals, fostering personal development, and improving overall life satisfaction. Life coaches are not licensed mental health professionals but participate in training to guide, support, and motivate clients in making positive changes in their lives. Licensed mental health professionals can provide life coaching services and will distinguish the differences at the onset of the relationship to ensure client expectations and ethical standards.
Life coaching aims to empower you to identify your strengths, values, and priorities and create actionable plans to reach your desired outcomes in life. Rather than delving into the past, life coaching prioritizes goal-setting, problem-solving, and developing practical strategies for overcoming obstacles and achievement.
